Chapter 8: Hair as Time
Months marked themselves on Emma’s head more honestly than any calendar.
Fuzz became curl at the nape. She stood on a chair at the mirror and declared the back “like Mommy’s.” Daniel learned to comb without pulling. I learned to sit through the pediatrician’s routine questions without flinching when the word scalp appeared on a form. The January visit was a note in a chart now, not an open emergency. The doctor praised growth and did not pry. I signed the encounter summary and kept a copy. Habit.
Work travel returned in small doses. The first overnight trip required a script for Emma and a backup plan that did not involve anyone named Dawson except Daniel. Video calls showed her holding the bear up to the camera. “Chocolate next time?” she asked. I said yes and meant ordinary promises, not atonement. When I came home she ran for the door. The running was the metric. No wall. No thin pajamas against cold glass. Only a child who expected arms.
Lauren was sighted by a mutual acquaintance at a store on the North Side. The acquaintance, unhelpful, offered to “broker peace.” I declined. Peace was not a coupon Lauren got to redeem with proximity. Margaret sent a birthday card for Emma through the mail, thick with religious language and no accountability. I returned it to sender. Daniel watched me at the post office window and said nothing until we were outside. “Thank you,” he said. I told him thanks belonged to the camera and to the officer who had taken the photos without blinking.
We celebrated Emma’s fourth birthday in the new apartment with three children from daycare, my mother, and a cake shaped poorly like a bear. No one from Daniel’s side attended. The absence was a boundary with frosting on top. Emma blew out candles and demanded music. We provided music. That night she fell asleep without the hat. I stood in the dark and listened to her breathe until the old panic loosened its inventory of worst cases.
