Chapter 3: Traces of the Core Deficit

By 8:30 AM on Friday morning, the glass tower of Core Dynamics looked like a monolith of solid ice against the gray, weeping sky. I strode through the main security barrier, my posture perfectly straight despite the dull ache flaring through my newly responsive legs, my tailored charcoal wool coat buttoned to my chin.
The guards at the primary checkpoint straightened up instantly as my senior executive biometric clearing card chirped sharply against the terminal.
"Good morning, Director Lin," the head of security, Marcus, said, his voice hard, professional. "Your assistant notified our detail at six-thirty. The whitelist parameters have been completely rewritten."
"Thank you, Marcus," I said, my voice carrying an icy authority that left no room for internal question. "If Adrian Mercer or any associate representing his family trust attempts to access the server arrays or the 40th floor, they are to be detained for corporate trespass. Their secondary proximity cards have been completely deleted from the master server."
"Consider it done, sir. The perimeter team has already established the boundary."
I rode the private elevator up to the executive suite alone. When the steel doors slid open, I found David waiting outside my office holding a thick, red folder and a digital tablet.
"The forensic accounting team finished the New York trace, Arthur," David said, trailing behind me as I walked into my pristine office. "It’s a massive liability. Adrian wasn't just losing money on standard margin accounts. He was borrowing against the titles of Vanguard’s holdings using forged power-of-attorney forms that he authorized through our corporate notary seal."
I sat behind my marble desk, my fingers instantly pulling up the transaction flowcharts on my screen. "They were using Core Dynamics’ legal identity to validate private loans for Melissa's shell galleries."
May you like
"Exactly," David nodded, his face tight with professional disgust. "Over one point eight million dollars has been cleared through the Delaware shell node since Q2. If the federal compliance regulators run a standard audit on our notary logs this morning, your name will look like the primary clearing authority for the entire fraud."
I let out a low, cold breath that slightly fogged the polished edge of my display. Adrian hadn't just abandoned my grandchildren; he had engineered a financial execution ring to ensure that if his logistics firm went down, my corporate career, my capital, and my liberty would be used as the ultimate sacrificial ballast to save his pride.
