Chapter 9: The Confrontation at the Terrace

The mid-afternoon light shifted into a stark, cold shadow as the silver enforcement cruisers silently blocked the curb space outside the sidewalk café entrance.

Adrian Mercer sat frozen at a corner table inside the glass-walled pavilion, his white laboratory coat pristine, his face carrying the smooth, unwavering entitlement of an executive director who believed his administrative rank insulated him from street-level accountability.

The heavy glass entryway turnstiles burst wide open. Two state police detectives strode onto the heated terrace floorboards, accompanied by four armed uniform officers. Behind them, Eleanor Vance walked past the low hedge row holding an official federal containment brief.

Adrian staggered backward against the central granite planter, his face draining of every trace of color as the steel cuffs clicked loudly around his wrists before he could take a single defensive breath.

"The transaction loop is closed, Adrian," I said, walking onto the terrace with a flawless, completely steady stride, my lower limbs moving with a smooth mathematical precision that left his legal counsel speechless. "Vanguard's compliance committee successfully verified the cryptographic tokens you cloned from my study terminal. The state medical review board has already executed an emergency suspension of your clinical license based on severe child endangerment and industrial fraud metrics."

Adrian stared at my moving feet, his eyes wide with a combination of visceral terror and breathless, frantic panic as the officers led his frame toward the exit turnstiles. "Arthur... wait... it's a structural misunderstanding... the grandchildren can be re-allocated into the estate..."

"The balance sheet is permanently closed, Adrian," I replied quietly, turning my back on his shouting. "Take him down."
