Chapter 10: What Remains

Three months later, I gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

I named her Elena.

Not after Grant’s mother — but after my own mother, who had passed away when I was twelve. It felt right. A new beginning with an old, loved name.

My father was in the delivery room with me. He held my hand the entire time and cried when he first saw his granddaughter.

After the birth, as I held Elena in my arms, I finally allowed myself to cry — not from fear, but from relief.

The house that had once been a prison was now mine again. Grant’s name had been removed from everything. Evelyn had moved to another state after her legal troubles and had stopped contacting me.

I was finally free.

One quiet evening, while my father was visiting and holding Elena, he looked at me and said,

“You’re stronger than I ever gave you credit for.”

I smiled tiredly.

“I had a good teacher.”

He shook his head.

“No,” he said. “You did this on your own. I just made sure you weren’t alone while you did it.”

He looked down at Elena, his expression softening.

“She’s going to grow up knowing she’s safe,” he said. “Because her mother fought for her.”

I looked at my daughter sleeping peacefully in my father’s arms and felt something I hadn’t felt in a very long time.

Hope.

The bruises had faded.

The fear was slowly leaving.

And even though the scars — both visible and invisible — would always be there, I was no longer defined by them.

I was no longer the woman who stayed quiet.

I was the woman who chose to speak.

And more importantly, I was the woman who chose to protect her child — no matter what it cost.
