Chapter 9: The Reckoning

Two weeks later, everything came to a head.

Grant’s lawyer contacted our side with an offer: if I dropped the charges and agreed to work things out privately, Grant would agree to a divorce and give up all rights to the baby.

My father and the lawyer laughed when they heard it.

But Evelyn wasn’t done.

She tried one last, desperate move.

She went to Grant’s commanding officer and claimed that I had been mentally unstable for years and that I was making everything up to get revenge because Grant wanted a divorce. She even brought old medical records from when I was a teenager and had anxiety, twisting them to make it seem like I had a long history of being “unstable.”

It backfired.

Badly.

Because my father had already prepared a thick file of evidence — medical reports from the hospital, photos of my injuries, statements from neighbors, and even text messages Evelyn had sent me in the past telling me to “stop being so dramatic.”

When Lieutenant Colonel Whitaker saw the evidence, he was furious.

Not only did he reject Evelyn’s claims, but he also recommended that the Army pursue charges against Grant under the Uniform Code of Military Justice for conduct unbecoming of an officer.

That same week, Evelyn was charged in civilian court for violating the protective order and for witness intimidation.

Grant, facing both military and civilian charges, finally broke.

He accepted a plea deal.

He would plead guilty to domestic assault. In exchange, he would receive a reduced sentence and be dishonorably discharged from the Army. He also agreed to give up all parental rights to the baby and stay away from me permanently.

When my father told me the news, I sat in silence for a long time.

It was finally over.

Or at least, the worst of it was.
