Chapter 12: The Reckoning

The final meeting took place in a neutral conference room on the fiftieth floor of a downtown law firm. Neutral ground. No one’s territory.

Claire arrived first.

She wore a simple black dress and minimal jewelry. Her hair was pulled back neatly. She looked calm, almost serene, as she sat at the long table with Margaret Hale beside her.

Harrison arrived ten minutes later with his lawyer. Patricia came with him, dressed in an expensive cream suit that no longer looked quite as powerful as it once had. Her face was pale, and there were dark circles under her eyes that makeup couldn’t fully hide.

No one shook hands.

Margaret opened a thick folder and slid it across the table.

“This is our final offer,” she said. “Claire is willing to settle without pursuing criminal charges for financial misconduct during the marriage. In exchange, Harrison will relinquish any and all claims to Claire’s personal assets, investments, and properties — including Voss Tower. Patricia Voss will also sign an agreement stating she will make no further claims against Claire, financial or otherwise.”

Harrison’s lawyer reviewed the documents in silence for several minutes.

Harrison stared at Claire the entire time.

When he finally spoke, his voice was hoarse.

“You’re taking everything.”

Claire looked at him directly.

“I’m taking back what was mine. Everything else is the consequence of the choices you and your mother made.”

Patricia’s hands were shaking as she gripped the edge of the table.

“You can’t do this,” she said, her voice cracking. “You’ll destroy the Voss name. You’ll destroy Harrison’s future.”

Claire turned her gaze to Patricia.

“You tried to destroy mine for five years. You treated me like an outsider in my own marriage. You spent my money like it was your birthright. And when I finally stopped, you showed up at my door with a locksmith.”

She leaned forward slightly.

“Now you’re going to learn what it feels like when someone takes from you.”

Harrison’s lawyer cleared his throat.

“My client is prepared to accept the terms,” he said quietly. “But we have one request.”

Margaret raised an eyebrow.

“Harrison would like to speak with Claire privately for five minutes. After that, we can proceed with the signing.”

Claire was quiet for a moment.

Then she nodded.

“Five minutes.”

Everyone else left the room.

Harrison and Claire sat across from each other in silence for several long seconds.

Finally, Harrison spoke.

“I loved you,” he said. “At the beginning. I really did.”

Claire looked at him without emotion.

“Maybe you did. But you loved my money more. And your mother loved it even more than you did.”

Harrison dropped his gaze to the table.

“I don’t know how to fix this.”

“You can’t,” Claire said simply. “It’s already done.”

She stood up.

“Sign the papers, Harrison. And then stay out of my life.”

She walked out of the room before he could reply.
