Chapter 14: The Quiet

A month after the settlement was signed, Claire stood alone in her penthouse.
The city stretched out below her in every direction. The Mississippi River glittered under the afternoon sun. She had just finished unpacking the last box from her old life.
Most of her things from the marriage were gone — donated, sold, or thrown away. The only things she kept were the ones that had belonged solely to her.
She walked through the apartment slowly, running her hand along the marble countertops and the cool glass of the windows.
This place was hers.
Completely.
No one could take it from her. No one could walk in uninvited. No one could treat her like she didn’t belong here.
She sat on the couch and looked around the quiet space.
For five years, she had lived in a different kind of silence — the silence of swallowing her anger, of smiling when she wanted to scream, of paying for things she didn’t believe in just to keep the peace.
That silence was gone now.
In its place was a different kind of quiet.
The quiet of peace.
The quiet of knowing she had finally chosen herself.
Claire closed her eyes and let herself feel it.
She had lost a marriage.

But she had gained herself back.
And that, she realized, was worth every sacrifice she had made along the way.
