Chapter 14: The Note in the Album

I revised the note behind the album cover when Noah turned three.
The new version read: You arrived by science, contract, and two people who wanted you enough to endure clinics and a grandmother who wanted truth enough to stay after she got it. The first week was a mess of love and management. The years after are the point.
I showed the note to Megan. She cried in the practical way of a mother who has not slept enough in years. She asked if she could add a line. She wrote: And by a woman who carried you with care and chose her boundary. We honor that without owning her.

Daniel did not write a line. He cooked dinner and burned the rice and accepted our teasing. Different languages of the same repair.
At preschool pickup a teacher said Noah had told the class babies grow in “helper tummies sometimes.” The teacher checked my face for discomfort. I said, “That’s correct,” and helped Noah with his zipper. The sky did not split. A child walked to the car talking about blocks. This was the inheritance I had wanted when I drove to the hospital in tears—not a perfect story, a true one that could survive daylight.
