Chapter 4: The Nurse

I returned to the maternity floor with flowers for the staff and a careful question for the charge nurse, not an accusation.
The nurse who had whispered was off shift. The charge nurse listened, checked a note, and said gently that handoffs from gestational carriers sometimes created conversational confusion in a busy hallway—especially when family arrived expecting a traditional labor narrative. She would not discuss specific patients. She did say that if a family had chosen privacy, staff were trained not to correct grandparents in corridors.
So the whisper had been a breach and a mercy at once.
I left the flowers. I sat in my car in the hospital deck and cried for the version of the week I thought I had lived—the version where my son’s trembling voice on the phone was only joy, not stage management.
Then I dried my face and drove to their house for a feeding, because Noah’s schedule did not care about my rewrite.
