Chapter 9: The Truth

Two nights later, after the twins had gone to bed, Luca and I sat on the small balcony above the bakery. It was the first time we had been alone together without the children since he arrived.
I had been avoiding this conversation, but I knew it couldn’t wait any longer.
“I need to know what really happened that night,” I said. “With my sister.”
Luca was quiet for a long time, staring out at the dark street.
“She came to the penthouse saying she needed to talk about you,” he finally said. “She told me you were planning to leave me. That you had been seeing someone else. I didn’t believe her at first, but she started crying and said she had proof on her phone.”
He ran a hand through his hair.
“I let her in. She asked for a drink. While I was in the kitchen, she must have gone into the bedroom and taken off her clothes. When I came back, she was in our bed. She tried to kiss me. I pushed her away and told her to get out.”
Luca looked at me.
“That’s when you walked in.”
I felt sick.
“Why didn’t you come after me?” I asked. “Why didn’t you explain?”
“I tried,” Luca said. “I called you hundreds of times. I searched for you for months. But you were gone. And your sister kept feeding me lies. She told me you said you hated me and never wanted to see me again.”
I closed my eyes.
Sophia had always been jealous of my relationship with Luca. I just never thought she would destroy it completely.
“I should have trusted you more,” Luca continued. “I should have known you wouldn’t leave without a reason. But I was angry and hurt, and I let my pride get in the way.”
He turned to look at me.
“I’m sorry, Isabella. For everything. For not protecting what we had. For not finding you sooner. For not being there when you needed me the most.”
I felt tears slip down my cheeks before I could stop them.
“I was pregnant,” I whispered. “I found out two months after I left. I was so scared. I almost called you so many times.”
Luca’s face twisted with pain.
“I know I can’t undo what happened,” he said. “But I want to make it right. Not just for the twins… but for you too, if you’ll let me.”
I wiped my tears.
“I don’t know if I can trust you again,” I admitted. “But I also don’t want to keep punishing you forever. The twins deserve to know their father.”
Luca reached out slowly and took my hand. I didn’t pull away.
“Then let me earn your trust,” he said. “One day at a time. No pressure. No expectations. Just… let me be here.”
I looked at our joined hands.

For the first time in three years, I didn’t feel the urge to run.
“Okay,” I whispered. “One day at a time.”
