Whitaker Analytics announced a restructuring in the trade press: leaner headcount, refocused product line, new lead on capital markets relationships. Daniel retained an operating title under closer board oversight. It was survival, not vindication. I read the piece once and did not search for reactions.
Carlisle invited me to preview the foundation’s annual letter. I revised two paragraphs about partner accountability and left the rest. The gala would return the following year with the same string quartet and better briefing on seat cards. Carlisle, dryly, said security had already updated its protocols. I almost smiled.
At the cabin I cooked simple food and slept through the night more often than not. The absence of waiting—for an apology that could restore an old arrangement, for a crisis that demanded my guarantee—created a quiet I had not trusted at first. By the third week of temporary orders, I trusted it enough to buy a second desk chair and leave it empty on purpose.
