Chapter 7: The Room with Minutes

We sat on opposite sides of a polished table while a paralegal took notes that would never read like a reconciliation film.
Daniel apologized for Vanessa’s hand and for the hotel receipt and for the travel entries he had previously called errors. The apology had structure. It had also arrived only after the bridge facility’s renewal became uncertain and the independent director began asking questions in full sentences. I thanked him for the chronology and asked for the disclosures in writing. He said trust should not require a data room. I said trust had already been spent in a ballroom and I was now accepting only currency that cleared.

We left with a schedule. No handshake photographs. In the elevator bank he asked whether I still loved him. I told him the question was premature by several folders. He stared at the floor numbers as if they might offer a better script.
Outside, the city continued its ordinary commerce. I drove back to the cabin with the windows cracked and the phone on silent. Love, if it still existed under the wreckage, would have to survive accounting. I was done financing sentiment with guarantees.
