Chapter 5: The Secretary’s Fall

Chloe arrived at Dominic’s office at 8:15 a.m. like she always did — perfectly dressed, coffee in hand, ready to start another day of pretending she ran the company.
She didn’t make it past the lobby.
Two men in dark suits were waiting for her. They didn’t raise their voices. They simply showed her identification from Sterling Holdings’ internal security division and asked her to come with them quietly.
Chloe tried to argue. She tried to call Dominic. She even threatened them with legal action.
None of it worked.
By 9:30 a.m., Chloe was sitting in a small, windowless conference room on the 42nd floor of Sterling Tower. Victor sat across from her. I watched from behind the one-way mirror.
She looked smaller than she had last night.
Victor didn’t waste time.
“You’ve been helping Dominic Harrington move money out of this company for over a year,” he said calmly. “You’ve also been helping him hide his second family from his wife. We have emails, wire transfers, and meeting records. You’re looking at serious federal charges.”
Chloe’s face went pale, but she tried to stay defiant.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said.
Victor slid a tablet across the table. On the screen was an email she had sent to one of Dominic’s shell companies six months ago, coordinating a transfer of $2.3 million.
Chloe stared at it.
Victor leaned forward slightly.
“Here’s what’s going to happen,” he said. “You’re going to tell us everything. Every account. Every lie you helped Dominic tell. Every time you covered for him. And in exchange, I might consider not handing you over to the FBI with a bow on top.”
Chloe was quiet for a long time.
Then she started talking.
She told us how Dominic had met Elena Voss at a conference three years ago. How he had slowly built a second life with her in another city. How Chloe had been the one booking his “business trips,” arranging apartments, and making sure Vivienne never found out.
When she finished, Victor stood up.
“One more thing,” he said. “You’re fired. Effective immediately. And if you ever try to contact Dominic Harrington again, I will make sure you spend the next ten years in federal prison.”
Chloe looked up at him, her eyes red.
“What about Dominic?” she asked. “Are you going to destroy him too?”
Victor looked at her without emotion.
“I’m going to erase him.”
He walked out of the room.
I stayed behind the glass for a moment longer, watching Chloe put her head in her hands and start crying.

I felt no satisfaction.
Only a cold, heavy certainty that this was just the beginning.
