Chapter 12: The Charges

The formal charges were filed on a gray Tuesday morning.
My mother: aggravated elder abuse, unlawful imprisonment, forgery, felony theft, and attempted murder by neglect.
My father: the same, with an additional count of conspiracy.
Kyle: unlawful imprisonment, elder abuse, and theft as an accomplice.
Bail was set high enough that none of them walked out of the arraignment. I attended in civilian clothes, seated in the back row. When my mother’s eyes found me across the courtroom, I did not look away. I wanted her to see that the daughter she had dismissed was present for every consequence.
Outside the courthouse, Elena reviewed the next steps. The case was strong. The medical evidence, the financial trail, the hidden phone, the forged documents, and Grandpa’s clear testimony formed a chain with no weak links. A plea was possible, but she was prepared to take it to trial if necessary.

“Let them try,” I replied. “The shed doesn’t spin.”
