Chapter 13: The Plea

They folded three weeks later.

My father’s attorney initiated the conversation. Full admissions from both parents in exchange for sentencing recommendations that would still result in substantial prison time but avoid a trial that would expose every detail in open court. Kyle, seeing the collapse, accepted a lesser plea that included cooperation and a shorter sentence.

I was present when Elena explained the terms to Grandpa. He listened carefully, then asked only one question.

“Will they be able to touch my money or my decisions again?”

“Never,” Elena said.

He nodded once. “Then accept it. I don’t need a spectacle. I need them gone.”

The pleas were entered on a quiet Thursday. I watched from the gallery as my mother and father stood in turn and admitted, under oath, what they had done. The words were stiff, stripped of the performances they had relied on for so long. When the judge accepted the pleas and remanded them into custody pending sentencing, something tight in my chest finally loosened.

It was not joy.
It was the absence of the need to keep fighting.
