Chapter 8: The Hospital

Grant carried me into St. Catherine’s like a hero.
He smiled at everyone. He used my full name when he spoke to the staff. He told them I had been drinking and lost my balance in the shower.
Dr. Elias Reed was young but experienced. He examined me quietly while Grant hovered nearby.
When he saw the pattern of bruises — old ones fading into yellow, new ones dark purple, finger marks on my arms and wrists — he stopped pretending to believe the story.
