Chapter 2: The Man Who Could Walk

The ballroom fell into a stunned, suffocating silence.

Adrian stood tall in front of the altar, no longer hunched in the wheelchair. He adjusted his black suit jacket with calm, deliberate movements, as if standing up was the most natural thing in the world. Two hundred guests stared at him in disbelief. Some had their mouths open. Others had their phones halfway out, unsure whether to record or not.

My father was the first to speak. His voice came out hoarse.

“What… what the hell is this?”

Adrian looked at him without a trace of warmth.

“This,” he said evenly, “is me stopping the performance.”

He turned slightly and offered me his hand. I took it without hesitation. My legs felt weak, but I stood beside him, still holding my bouquet with one hand.

My mother’s face had gone completely pale. Vanessa looked like she had seen a ghost.

“You…” Vanessa stammered, pointing at Adrian. “You said you were paralyzed. You told us you had a climbing accident. You—”

“I lied,” Adrian cut her off, his voice calm but sharp. “Quite convincingly, apparently.”

He looked around the room, addressing the guests directly.

“For those who don’t know me, my name is Adrian Blackwood. And for the past eight months, I have been pretending to be disabled so I could observe this family up close.”

A wave of shocked murmurs spread through the ballroom.

My father’s expression twisted with rage and confusion.

“Blackwood?” he repeated. “As in… Eleanor Blackwood’s nephew?”

Adrian gave a small, cold smile.

“Her only nephew. And the current majority shareholder of Blackwood Capital.”

The name hit the room like a bomb.

Blackwood Capital was one of the largest and most discreet investment firms in the country. They rarely appeared in the news, but when they moved, entire companies changed hands. My father had spent years trying to secure funding from them without success.

Adrian continued, his voice carrying across the silent ballroom.

“Three years ago, my aunt Eleanor invested in Mercer Manufacturing to save it from bankruptcy. In return, she received shares that were placed into a trust. Upon her death, those shares — and the controlling interest that came with them — passed to me.”

He turned his gaze to my father.

“You assumed Claire had signed everything over to your son after the marriage. You were wrong. She never did. And neither did I.”

My father’s face had turned an ugly shade of red.

“You’re lying,” he spat. “Eleanor would never—”

“Eleanor knew exactly what kind of man you are,” Adrian interrupted. “That’s why she structured the trust the way she did. She just didn’t live long enough to see you try to steal it.”

He looked at me then, his expression softening slightly.

“Claire didn’t know who I really was when we first met. I wanted to keep it that way until I was sure. And after watching how your family treated her… I became very sure.”

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward, her voice high and accusing.

“This is insane! You can’t just walk in here and—”

Adrian turned his cold gaze on her.

“Miss Mercer,” he said quietly, “I suggest you sit down. Because what comes next is going to be much worse than anything you’ve heard so far.”

At that moment, the twelve executives in dark suits began moving. Two of them walked toward the front and placed thick folders on the table near the wedding cake. Another two positioned themselves near the exits.

My father’s eyes darted around the room like a cornered animal.

“What is this?” he demanded. “Some kind of setup? You think you can blackmail us at our own daughter’s wedding?”

Adrian looked at him with something close to pity.

“This isn’t blackmail, Mr. Mercer,” he said. “This is an intervention. And these men and women behind me are not here as guests.”

He gestured toward the suited figures.

“They are forensic accountants, investigators, and legal representatives from Blackwood Capital and three of your largest institutional investors. They’ve spent the last six months auditing Mercer Manufacturing.”

My father’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

May you like

Adrian’s next words landed like a hammer.

“And they’ve found exactly what we expected to find.”
