Chapter 9: The Choice

That evening, Adrian and I sat on the terrace of his house. The city lights stretched out below us like scattered stars. For the first time in days, the air felt calm.

Adrian poured us both a glass of wine, then sat beside me.

“You’ve been quiet since you met Vanessa,” he said.

I took a sip of wine before answering.

“I keep thinking about how different our lives could have been,” I said. “If they had just… accepted me. If they had let me be part of the company instead of pushing me out. Maybe none of this would have happened.”

Adrian looked at me.

“Or maybe it would have happened anyway,” he said. “Some people only know how to take. Your family is like that. They were always going to push until someone pushed back.”

He reached over and took my hand.

“You don’t have to decide everything tonight, Claire. But you do have to decide what you want for yourself.”

I looked out at the lights.

“I don’t want to run the company,” I said. “I never did. But I also don’t want to disappear again. I spent too many years being invisible.”

Adrian nodded.

“Then don’t disappear. You can keep your shares. You can have a voice on the board without being involved in day-to-day operations. You can make sure the people who were hurt get protected. And you can build something of your own if you want to.”

He squeezed my hand gently.

“You have options now, Claire. Real ones. For the first time in your life.”

I looked at him.

“What about us?” I asked quietly. “Was any of it real? Or was I just… part of the plan?”

Adrian turned to face me fully. His expression was serious.

“Everything between us was real,” he said. “The only thing I lied about was the wheelchair. I fell in love with you because you were kind even when the world wasn’t kind to you. Because you kept trying even when your own family tried to break you. Because you saw people — really saw them — when most people only see what they can take.”

He reached up and gently touched my cheek.

“I asked you to marry me because I wanted to spend my life with you. Not because of the company. Not because of revenge. Because of you.”

Tears filled my eyes, but this time they weren’t from pain.

I leaned forward and rested my forehead against his.

“I believe you,” I whispered.

May you like

Adrian wrapped his arms around me, and for the first time since the wedding, I allowed myself to truly relax.

Whatever came next, I wouldn’t face it alone.
