Chapter 12: The Daughter Who Kept Trying

Sarah continued to visit me regularly.

She had started seeing a therapist and was working hard to understand why she had stayed quiet for so long. She was also rebuilding her life on her own terms. She had found a steady job at a local library and was renting a small apartment not far from me.

One Sunday afternoon, she came over with lunch and a nervous expression.

“Mom,” she said after we finished eating, “I want to ask you something. And I want you to know that it’s okay if you say no.”

I looked at her.

“What is it?”

She took a deep breath.

“Would it be okay if I brought someone over to meet you next month? His name is James. We’ve been seeing each other for a few months now. He’s… kind. He knows everything that happened with Dad and Melissa. He doesn’t judge me for it.”

I studied my daughter.

For so long, I had worried about her. I had worried that she would keep choosing men who didn’t respect her. Hearing her say she was being careful this time made something warm settle in my chest.

“I’d like to meet him,” I said.

Sarah’s face lit up.

“Really?”

I nodded.

“Really. But I want you to know something, Sarah. You don’t need my approval to be happy. You just need to make sure that whoever you choose respects you — the way I should have taught you to expect.”

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“You did teach me,” she said. “I just forgot for a while.”

We sat together in comfortable silence after that.

And for the first time in years, I felt like I was getting my daughter back — not the version who had sat silently at that Christmas table, but the version who was finally learning to stand on her own.
