Chapter 8: The Man Who Had Nothing Left

Michael’s life continued to fall apart.
Without access to my accounts and with his reputation damaged, he struggled to find steady work. His construction company had already been struggling before Christmas, and now several clients had pulled out after hearing what he had done.
He moved into a cheap motel on the edge of town. The same motel Sarah had briefly stayed at after their fight.
I received updates from time to time through mutual friends. No one was trying to gossip. They were simply shocked by how quickly everything had changed for him.
One afternoon, an old neighbor called me.
“Margaret, Michael came by the house yesterday asking if we knew anyone who was hiring. He looked… rough. Like he hadn’t slept properly in weeks.”
I didn’t feel joy when I heard this.
I simply felt that the consequences of his actions had finally caught up with him.
Michael had spent years believing he was entitled to my money and my home. When that belief was taken away, he had nothing left to fall back on. No savings of his own. No strong reputation. No backup plan.
