Chapter 4: Locks and Ledgers

The locksmith arrived before Julian’s second wind of apologies.

I packed a bag of his clothes into the garage with a note taped to the top: Contact Helen for shared property discussion. Do not enter. Evelyn tried to come with a casserole and a sermon. The new deadbolt did not care. Chloe texted a long message about loneliness, Daniel’s memory, and how Julian had “only meant to comfort.” I forwarded it to Helen without answering.

Bank alerts bloomed as Julian tested transfers. Helen’s preservation letters had already landed; several moves reversed like guilty hands pulled from a till. I sat at the kitchen table with three years of clinic statements and a highlighter. Failed cycles. Dates. Julian’s signature next to mine. Evelyn’s handwritten “encouragement” cards tucked into a drawer as if cruelty could be archived as care. I photographed the cards.

At night the house was too large. I slept on the sofa because the marital bed felt like a stage set. Mara stayed over once and made tea. We did not talk about babies. We talked about leases, about my consultancy’s clients, about the way Evelyn’s voice had said incapable as if it were science and not a weapon.

Daniel’s sister called from another state, cautious. She had heard rumors. She said Chloe’s pregnancy timeline “didn’t sit right with the widow story.” I did not recruit her. I thanked her and gave Helen’s number if she wished to share facts rather than grief. Facts were the only currency I intended to spend.
