Chapter 8: Evelyn’s War

Evelyn escalated the way she did everything—through rooms of people who owed her social fear.
Mutual friends received visits. A pastor’s wife called me with trembling concern about “broken homes and unborn children.” I thanked her for her concern and asked whether she had also heard Evelyn call me incapable of lineage on a recorded porch. The trembling stopped. The call ended.
Helen filed a narrow harassment letter after Evelyn appeared at my consultancy’s shared office lobby demanding to “speak sense into the barren wife.” Security removed her. I did not come downstairs. My client, waiting for a draft, asked if I was all right. I said I was precise. Precision got the draft done on time.

Julian texted an apology for his mother’s scene. I replied only to Helen’s copy: Control your agents or the record grows. The record grew anyway—lobby camera request, incident log. Evelyn called it persecution. Helen called it pattern.
At night I stood in the nursery doorway of the room we had once painted and then closed. Empty shelves. A mobile still in a box. I did not smash it. I sealed the box with tape and labeled it storage – decide later. Grief for a possible future was allowed. Hosting Evelyn’s grandson in my skull on her terms was not.
