Chapter 10: The Empty Guest Room

On the morning after the thirtieth day I cleaned the guest room thoroughly.
The windows stayed open until the last trace of someone else’s routine left the air. I vacuumed the corners, wiped the baseboards, and returned the spare set of towels to the hall closet. The room became neutral again—available for actual guests, not for temporary occupants who had mistaken the door code for a transfer of authority. Gabriella sent a short confirmation that the notice period had closed without incident and that the file would remain available if any further approach occurred. I thanked her and placed the folder in the drawer where Anthony and I had once kept the mortgage statements.
