Chapter 7: The First Week
The first week tested whether the notice would be treated as real or as a bluff that could still be negotiated away.
Linda began with silence, then with selective compliance, then with small tests—leaving dishes in the primary bathroom sink, moving a chair from the living room into the guest room without asking, commenting within my hearing that thirty days was “short for family.” I answered none of the comments. I removed the chair, returned it to its place, and left a brief written reminder on the guest-room door that the common areas and my private spaces remained outside the temporary arrangement. Edward attempted two separate conversations framed as concern for my stress and for the children’s sense of stability. I agreed that stability mattered and stated that stability would begin with clear ownership and clear exit dates. Both conversations ended when it became apparent I would not reopen the terms.
