Chapter 2: The Arrests

The silence in the auditorium lasted for exactly three seconds before absolute chaos erupted.

Parents were standing up, pointing and shouting. The university chancellor marched toward the audio-visual booth, demanding to know how the feed had been hijacked, but the doors were locked—a favor from a sympathetic janitor whose unfair eviction case I had helped win at the clinic.

Vanessa slumped down in her front-row seat, pulling her stolen white valedictorian honor stole over her face, crying hysterically as her classmates turned in their chairs to glare at her.

Caleb, realizing his entire life was about to end, didn't wait around to defend his girlfriend. He bolted from his seat, sprinting down the side aisle toward the emergency exit.

He didn't make it.

The heavy double doors swung open, and three uniformed police officers stepped inside, blocking his path. I had mailed a massive, heavily indexed binder of the financial and cyber evidence to the local precinct's fraud division three days ago, timing it perfectly so the warrants would be signed on the morning of graduation.

"Caleb Miller!" one of the officers barked, grabbing him by the shoulder and spinning him against the wall. "You're under arrest for felony cyber-tampering and academic fraud."

Down in the VIP section, two detectives approached Aunt Marlene.

"Don't touch me!" Marlene screamed, slapping at a detective's hand. "I am a prominent member of this community! That ungrateful little brat is making all of this up!"

"Ma'am, we have the bank routing numbers and the wire fraud evidence," the detective said coldly, producing a pair of steel handcuffs. "Marlene Vance, you are under arrest for identity theft, grand larceny, and wire fraud. Put your hands behind your back."

Marlene fought them, thrashing and screaming obscenities that echoed off the high ceilings, utterly destroying whatever shred of dignity she had left. She was dragged up the center aisle in handcuffs, her designer heels dragging against the carpet, right past the parents and faculty she had spent years trying to impress.

I stood on the center of the stage, Noah sleeping peacefully against my chest, anchored by the rhythmic beating of my heart. I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I just watched the woman who had terrorized my childhood finally face the consequences of her own greed.

The principal stepped up to the microphone, his hands trembling visibly.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he stammered into the mic, trying to regain control of a room that was entirely lost. "Please... please remain seated."

He turned to look at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and profound apology.

I didn't wait for him to speak. I adjusted the baby carrier, turned my back on the podium, and walked calmly down the stage steps.
