Chapter 14: A Different Summer

Summer returned with a force that once would have meant a canopy, a guest list, and a day at the grill.

I spent the first truly hot Saturday in a community garden plot I shared with two neighbors who knew me only as a woman who remembered to water. We harvested tomatoes and argued mildly about mulch. No one called my labor duty. When I went home, I washed the dirt from both hands and watched clear water run without the ghost of sauce on a white dress. In the evening I invited the noodle friends over and ordered food instead of cooking, because choice includes ease. We sat until late. No one filmed. No one needed to.

Claire was not in this story; the women at my table had their own names. One of them said, quietly, that her sister still thought I had “gone too far.” I said too far is a phrase people use when they preferred me at the grill. She winced and then nodded. The conversation moved on to books. Boundaries do not always require speeches. Sometimes they only require a room that does not reward the old hierarchy with attention.

Sleep that night was thick and unremarkable. Unremarkable had become my favorite kind of luxury.
