Chapter 2: Holds and Heat

Marcus’s preservation letter hit general counsel and the managing partners before most of them finished Monday coffee. It froze deletions, required holds on mail and financial logs, and named the trust as majority voting interest. Parallel to that, a burn specialist re-dressed my palm, improved the documentation, and wrote consistent with forced contact with a heated metal grate. I watched the ink dry with the specific relief of a fact finding formal clothes.

Daniel’s messages stacked from demand to soft regret to threats of calling me unstable before the board. I forwarded the thread to Marcus without reply. Unstable was a story. The camera file was a story he would watch with counsel present.

At eleven, a video conference convened: partners, general counsel, Marcus on my line. I kept the bandage below the frame and my voice in the register I used for term sheets. I did not describe smoke or Evelyn’s chuckle. I stated that serious bodily injury had occurred at my residence at the hands of the CEO; that video and medical evidence existed; that the trust would exercise section 4.2 rights pending review; that I expected cooperation with the hold. A partner asked about marital spillover. I said the grate did not care about the marriage certificate and neither did the operating agreement. Faces went careful. Careful was the beginning of respect in rooms that had only offered me the hostess smile.

Evelyn tried the suite’s concierge. The concierge, paid by the leasing entity, declined to confirm my presence. She left a note about family and reputation. I photographed it for the file and shredded it. Reputation had been her currency for a decade of my unpaid labor. The trust dealt in votes.

By late afternoon Daniel’s access to certain portals hung suspended. I sat with the hand elevated and watched the sky change through glass he had not paid for. Sequence was everything—sequence was how a woman told to understand service took apart a man’s certainty that service was all she was for.
