Chapter 11: The House Without Them

Home was quieter than it had been in months. I changed the locks the same afternoon we returned. The purple nighttime bottle that had lived by my mother-in-law’s bed was already in evidence; anything else that belonged to her left the house in a single box I set on the porch for my husband to collect during a supervised visit. He arrived, took the box, looked at the children through the doorway, and left without crossing the threshold. I did not invite him in.

The next weeks settled into a new pattern: correct doses given on schedule, temperatures checked without apology, pediatric follow-ups attended alone. My daughter returned to school with the same steady manner she had shown in the exam room. She asked only once whether Grandma would come back to stay the night. I told her no. She accepted the answer the way she had accepted the responsibility of pulling a medicine bottle out of the trash—quietly, completely, and without needing it repeated.
