Chapter 14: The Private Confirmation

Once, more than a year later, I took the copy of Dr. Sterling’s original chart notes from the drawer and read them again at the kitchen table after both children were asleep.

The language was clinical and exact: the nearly full prescription bottle, the laboratory confirmation of under-dosing and sedative exposure, the seven-year-old’s statement given without coaching, the father’s presence during the substitutions, the mother’s request that neither the husband nor the mother-in-law answer questions on her behalf. Nothing in the pages had softened with time. Nothing needed to. The record had done what my months of raised concerns had not: it had made the danger visible to people who possessed the authority to stop it.

I returned the pages to the drawer. The house stayed quiet. The locks I had changed the day we came home from the hospital still answered only to my key. The third and fourth places at the table remained unoccupied by choice rather than temporary arrangement.
