By morning the fever had broken. My son’s color improved; the weakened whimper gave way to a stronger, ordinary cry that sounded like protest instead of exhaustion. Dr. Sterling reviewed the overnight chart, repeated the key findings for the record, and informed me that the case had been referred to the appropriate child-protection and pharmacy-review channels given the deliberate substitution and the laboratory confirmation.
A hospital administrator and the social worker met with me privately. They outlined the immediate protections available: a temporary order restricting the mother-in-law’s contact, documentation that medical decisions would rest with me alone, and the option to request that my husband’s access be supervised until the full review was complete. I accepted every measure that kept the people who had replaced the medicine from being alone with my son again. My daughter’s statement remained the clearest account in the file; no one attempted to reframe it as confusion or imagination.
