Chapter 5: The Family Layer

The prosecutor moved next to the guarantees and pledged assets.

My parents’ signatures appeared on personal guarantees tied to Harbor Shield’s early bonding and line-of-credit instruments. Retirement accounts had been listed as contingent collateral. The marshland that had once belonged to my grandfather—property Grant had maneuvered into his control after declaring me a non-factor—had been used to strengthen the company’s balance sheet for the preference applications. I confirmed that I had never authorized the use of my name, my service history, or any family asset connected to me. I confirmed that the last time I had stood in my parents’ house in uniform, the forged discharge had already been accepted as truth and my presence had been treated as an inconvenience rather than a correction.

From the corner of my vision I saw my mother’s hands locked together in her lap. My father stared at the evidence screen as if the projected signatures might rearrange themselves into something less final. Grant kept his eyes forward, jaw set, performing the same controlled stillness he had used for a decade of lender meetings. The stillness no longer controlled the room.
