Chapter 3: Board Night

VeyraTech’s board did convene. The resolution that landed in our portal at 11:26 p.m. was closer to what I had named than to what Cameron would have preferred.
He was stripped of event roles, barred from investor contact, and placed under a compliance chaperone for company-related appearances. Margaret’s statement to the press used the phrase unacceptable behavior without the cushion of boys will be boys. Share price still dipped on the uncertainty around Arden. Lenders called. The downgrade whispers grew legs.
I did not celebrate. I revised the internal memo to terminated primary process; open to reconvene only under revised terms after a cooling period. Priya scheduled quiet conversations with two competing opportunities that had been waiting for Arden’s bandwidth. Capital, like water, finds grade.
Cameron’s apology letter arrived by courier—handwritten, performative, smelling faintly of someone else’s advice. I placed it in the file behind the photos of the crushed card that a photographer had already licensed to a business desk. Kelsey announced a “break” from content about the gala. The internet did not break with her.
On a gray morning I walked into the office and found a silver name card on my desk—new, uncrushed, printed by facilities after the story spread internally. Someone in the associates’ pool had a sense of humor. I left it there. Humor is allowed when the vote has already landed.
