Chapter 7: The Associate Pool

Inside Arden, the story threatened to become mythology—Eleanor and the silver card, a morality play for interns.

I shut that down in a Monday partners’ meeting with the same tone I used for mispriced risk. “We terminated a process because counterparty conduct signaled governance failure in public,” I said. “We did not win a duel. Anyone framing this as personal theater can step off my deals.” Silence held. Mythology retreated into jokes told far from my hearing, which was as much as a human workplace allows.

Priya kept the file tidy: video hashes, the crushed-card photos, Margaret’s board resolution, the reduced term sheet, the chaperone log. Clean files outlive clean narratives. When a limited partner asked, carefully, whether Arden had become “political,” I said we had become allergic to CEOs who could not control their representatives on marble floors. The LP laughed once and moved on to returns.

I mentored a junior associate who had been at a side table that night and had frozen when the card hit the floor. She asked how I had kept my voice level. I told her the truth: I had practiced level voices in rooms that refused to hear me for two decades; the ballroom was only louder, not harder. She nodded as if taking notes on a term sheet. Maybe she was.
