Chapter 10: Accounting Underway

By the second month the formal accounting of the education fund had moved from preservation into active demand.
My attorney issued structured requests for complete transfer histories, for the instruments used to redirect balances, and for any authorizations claimed in my name. The scholarship conditions and the original designation of the account remained the baseline. Arthur and Victoria’s earlier language of “joint family planning” met those documents and did not override them. Preliminary responses were incomplete. Incomplete responses were recorded as such and followed by narrower, dated demands.
The clinic record of the slap stayed attached to the same file. Counsel for my parents continued to treat the assault as a regrettable isolated excess and the podium presentation as disproportionate. The courtyard had contained hundreds of witnesses. The financial trail contained years of dates and amounts. Neither element required my daily emotional participation to remain effective. I reviewed summaries when decisions were needed and otherwise continued the practical construction of a life that did not route through Vance household authority.

Julian’s careful silence held. Occasional indirect suggestions that he “had not understood the arrangements” reached me through relatives and were forwarded without reply. Understanding was not the variable I managed. The variable was the unaltered record of where the money had gone while I worked and studied under a public story that I had quit.
Paige’s apartment remained the temporary base until the short-term lease began. I slept more regularly. The mark on my face faded. The envelope’s contents no longer needed to be rehearsed. They needed only to stay intact under counsel’s control.
