Chapter 12: Settled Record

By the end of the sixth month the record had settled into durable institutional form.

Material portions of the redirected funds were under formal recovery process. The forged instruments remained flagged and contested. The assault documentation stood unrevised. Arthur and Victoria’s attempts to convert the entire matter into a private family misunderstanding had failed against dates, amounts, signatures, and the density of witnesses who had seen a graduation cap hit pavement after an open hand.

I did not attend every procedural step. Counsel managed what required management. I attended when a decision or a presence was necessary and otherwise worked, paid my rent, and maintained the boundary that kept their preferred narrative from re-entering my daily life. The boundary was not theatrical. It was the practical consequence of four years of erasure ending in a public strike and a public correction.

Paige remained a constant without being asked to carry the conflict. The university’s formal interest in the ceremony disruption had closed after the factual statement and the clinic note. Media attention, such as it had been, faded once it became clear I would not perform the story for cameras. The story did not need performance. It needed the file to remain intact.

I kept no running inventory of their losses or their embarrassment. I kept the diploma, the catalogued copies, and the knowledge that the version of me sold to relatives—careless, unmotivated, ungrateful, gone—had been replaced by a documented sequence no longer under their control.

The courtyard had ended the lie.

The months that followed had locked the correction in place.

I did not require their acceptance.

I required only that the record not move.

It did not.
