Faced with the footage, the medical record, and consistent statements, Mother and Natalie accepted a structured outcome that included admissions sufficient to sustain the protective orders, fines, and conditions that barred contact with Claire and approach to the property. It was not the dramatic verdict some stories preferred. It was enforceable. David called it a clean enough landing. Claire called it the end of having to recount the snow to strangers in suits.

I attended the required dates. Claire attended only what she chose. When it was finished, we drove to the house without looking at the courthouse in the rearview longer than necessary. The trust remained untouched by their pleas. Occupancy remained ours. The dining room remained a room without their laughter in it.
That evening Claire stood at the sink and washed two ordinary plates. I dried them. The task was small. The fact that no one else set a place at our table was not.
