Chapter 3: The House

I walked the property that afternoon with David and a locksmith while Claire rested under a neighbor’s watch and a hospital discharge plan for the next morning.

The dining table still held the wedding china. My father’s chair still held the open wine. Natalie’s coat hung in the hall closet as if she expected to return for supper. I had the china packed for storage, the wine logged into inventory, the coat bagged for collection under the attorney’s supervision. Emotion was a luxury for later. Sequence came first: secure the premises, preserve evidence, document every drawer they had treated as inheritance already received.

In the study I found a folder of draft transfer documents, none of them valid under the trust, all of them annotated in my mother’s handwriting with phrases like once she signs and Ethan will agree when he’s home. I photographed the folder in place and handed it to David’s associate. On the mantel, a framed photo of my father had been turned face down. I set it upright and left it there.

Natalie called from a number I did not recognize. I let it go to the attorney’s intake line. Mother tried the house landline until the line was redirected. Their messages, when David played the relevant ones, swung between injury and threat—how dare I air family business, how Claire had always been manipulative, how the estate would still find its way to “blood.” Blood, I noted, had not been cold on the driveway.

By evening the locks were new, the cameras verified, and a short written inventory secured. I drove back to the hospital with a bag of Claire’s own clothes from the closet they had not yet emptied into donation bags of their own design.
