Chapter 12: The Estate as Designed

David and I completed the administrative cleanup the trust required after a challenge season: updated inventories, confirmed account authorities, a short memo to the bank’s trust officer that no further claims from the prior occupants would be recognized without court order. My father’s structure held. It had been built for exactly the kind of pressure that had arrived in draft transfer papers and a closed door onto a frozen driveway.

I walked the property line once in late summer and found nothing that needed defending except ordinary fence boards. The cameras stayed up. Habit and history both recommended it. Claire stopped flinching at the sound of a car in the drive when the app showed a delivery and not a familiar silhouette.

Natalie moved to another county, according to a relative who still felt obligated to report. Mother lived with a friend and spoke of us only in rooms we did not enter. I did not track them beyond what the protective conditions required. Attention was a resource. I spent mine on the woman who had waited through two years of deployment and one night of snow.
