Chapter 11: Long-Term Orders
The longer protective orders were entered without provision for contact or supervised access.
Sophie remained under formal restriction protecting her from the three adults she had identified. The orders prohibited approach, communication, and third-party attempts to obtain information about her location or schedule. Requests for modification continued to be filed and continued to be denied. The court treated the documented injury, the consistent identifications, and the absence of any plausible alternative explanation as controlling.
Practical implementation followed immediately. Preschool, pediatric, and emergency-contact records were updated to reflect the standing restrictions. Authorization lists carried only approved adults. The secure household arrangements that had begun at my sister’s house transitioned into a stable long-term configuration under my direct oversight. No residual caregiving role remained for anyone who had been present at the party and named by Sophie.
The identified adults, through counsel, maintained that the events had been misunderstood and that family relationships were being permanently damaged by an exaggerated response. The photographic record of the handprint, the clinic documentation, and Sophie’s repeated statements limited the persuasive force of those claims. I did not engage the public or private framing. Counsel handled every communication. The protective orders answered for themselves.

Sophie adapted to the clearer structure with the practical resilience of a young child once the source of fear had been removed. She no longer scanned doorways with the same tension. She asked for ordinary things—stories, playground time, the stuffed rabbit she had carried since the night of the party. The larger secret she had first indicated with one quiet sentence remained part of the closed investigative file rather than part of her daily conversation.
I maintained the perimeter without ceremony. The laundry room at the original party house was irrelevant. The orders governing who could come near Sophie were not.
