Chapter 7: The Expanding Record
The investigation moved from preliminary statements into structured interviews within the first week.
Sophie met again with the child advocate in a quiet room designed for young children. The advocate used neutral language and allowed long pauses. Sophie identified the same adult she had pointed to across the party yard. When the conversation turned to the second part of her earlier statement—that the person had not been the only one—she grew still, then listed two additional first names in a voice so quiet the recording had to be reviewed twice. Both names belonged to adults who had been present at the gathering and who had already given brief, dismissive accounts claiming they had seen nothing unusual.
The detective added the new identifications to the file and scheduled formal interviews. The original handprint photographs, the clinic measurements, and the timeline from the laundry room remained the physical core of the case. No independent adult witness had come forward to describe the moment the mark was made. Several party guests continued to insist the injury must have resulted from a fall or from contact with another child. Those claims sat beside the clear hand-shaped mark and beside Sophie’s consistent pointing and naming.

Temporary protective restrictions were requested and granted. The adult Sophie had first identified, along with the two additional names she later provided, were prohibited from contact with her and from third-party attempts to obtain information about her location or schedule. I revised every practical authorization—pediatric, emergency, childcare—so that none of the three held any decision-making power. My sister’s house remained the secure residence. Sophie slept in a room that did not share a wall with a laundry space.
Relatives outside the restricted group continued to send messages framing the situation as a destructive overreaction. Some claimed Sophie had been coached. Others insisted that family unity required immediate private resolution. I forwarded every message to the detective and to counsel and made no reply. The only priority was the three-year-old who had been left crying beside a dryer with a handprint across her face and who had then stated, clearly, that more than one person had been involved.
