Chapter 4: Away from the Yard

The officer met us at the public library parking lot fifteen minutes later.

I kept Sophie in the car with the doors locked until the marked vehicle pulled in beside us. Then I stepped out, identified myself, and explained the sequence in order: the sound of crying from the laundry room, the handprint on her cheek, the way she had pointed across the party, and the quiet sentence that followed—she wasn’t the only one.

The officer photographed the mark under even light while Sophie stayed in my arms. The shape was still clearly a hand. He noted the time, the location of the party, and the fact that the child had identified a specific adult before stating that more than one person had been involved. A second unit was already heading to the gathering to secure names and preliminary statements before people began to leave.

Sophie did not want to speak further in the open parking lot. I told the officer we would continue at the pediatric urgent-care clinic so the injury could be examined and documented properly. He agreed and followed us there.

At the clinic the nurse and physician recorded the handprint, measured it against standard references, and noted the absence of any other visible injury. Sophie remained quiet but cooperative as long as I stayed within reach. When the physician asked gently who had hurt her, she repeated the same two facts she had given me: the person she had pointed to, and the statement that there had been others. She offered no additional names yet. The physician entered everything into the chart and notified the appropriate child-protection channel as required.

I did not return to the party. I did not take calls from relatives who had begun to message once the second police unit arrived. Sophie needed a quiet room, clean clothes, and the certainty that the adults who had left her crying beside a dryer would not be the ones deciding what happened next.
