Chapter 5: The Police at the Gate

"You... you set me up!" Jordan choked out, dropping to his knees on the concrete patio, clutching his head as if it might explode. "I left my wife! I left my children for you! I bought you a condo!"
"You didn't buy her a condo, Jordan," Clark corrected coldly. "You signed a fraudulent mortgage using Vance Enterprises' corporate escrow fund as collateral. Which brings us to the second document in that box."
Jordan frantically pawed at the bottom of the silver box and pulled out a blue legal cover sheet.
"That is a notice of emergency receivership and a federal criminal referral," Clark stated, his voice echoing over the silent backyard. "Percy didn't just steal your personal money. She drained three hundred thousand dollars from your company's client trust account—and because you gave her your security tokens to hide your infidelity expenses, the audit trail shows your signature on every single unauthorized wire."
Percy didn't try to argue. She didn't try to defend her "love" for Jordan.
She turned on her heel and bolted toward the side gate, her designer sandals slapping against the stone.
"Stop her!" Jordan screamed from his knees, his voice cracking with hysterical sobs. "Somebody stop her!"
She didn't make it to the street.
The side gate swung open before Percy could touch the latch. Two uniformed police officers and a plainclothes detective from the financial crimes division stepped into the yard, blocking her path.
"Percy Cole?" the detective asked, holding up a pair of steel handcuffs. "You're under arrest for felony wire fraud, grand larceny, and identity theft. Keep your hands where I can see them."
I stood by the edge of the patio, my hand resting over my mouth, watching the man who had mocked my appearance five minutes ago sob hysterically on my pool deck while his mistress was handcuffed against the fence.

Clark stepped close to me, his presence solid and protective, and gently placed a hand on my shoulder.
"I believe," Clark whispered softly so only I could hear, "that Toby's birthday party is just getting started."
