Chapter 8: The Asset Recovery

By Tuesday morning, the full scope of Jordan's disaster had made its way through the downtown legal district.

I sat in my attorney's conference room, my six-month-old daughter asleep in her stroller beside me. Across the mahogany table sat Clark, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, alongside my lawyer, Brenda.

"The forensic audit is complete, Maya," Brenda said, sliding a thick stack of financial schedules across the table. "Because Jordan used his executive security tokens to facilitate Percy's fraudulent wires while attempting to hide marital assets from the court, the judge signed an immediate protective order."

"What does that mean for the kids?" I asked.

"It means you are completely insulated from his corporate liabilities," Clark explained, opening a folder. "Apex Forensic Recovery traced the remaining four hundred thousand dollars Percy tried to offshore to Panama. We froze the wire before it cleared the clearinghouse."

He pointed to a highlighted figure at the bottom of the page.

"Because Jordan committed financial fraud against the marital estate during an active divorce, the judge awarded you one hundred percent of the equity in the house, full custody of the children, and a secured lien against his remaining frozen assets for child support."

"And Jordan?" I asked.

"He's facing a lengthy civil battle with his corporate partners to avoid prison time for the escrow shortages," Brenda said plainly. "He's currently sleeping on a cot in his attorney's basement. He won't be bothering you again."

I looked at the documents—the clean deed to my home, the secured trust funds for my four children, and the formal end of a twenty-year marriage that had tried to erase my worth.

I picked up the pen and signed my name on the final line.
