Chapter 14: The Quiet Power

The quiet power came in small moments.
I made decisions in the boardroom without raising my voice.
I visited the foundation I had funded and watched women rebuild their lives.
I sat in my apartment at night, reading a book I chose for myself, with no need for approval.
I did not date. I did not explain. I did not apologize for the space I now occupied.
Margaret called one last time.
I answered.
“I need help,” she said.
I listened to the pride cracking in her voice.
“I know,” I said.
I did not give money.
I introduced her to the foundation director who helped women in difficult family situations.
Margaret accepted.
The quiet power was not revenge.
