Chapter 7: The Past

The past came back that evening in my hotel room.

I sat with the old files my attorney had sent me and read the story I had never fully known.

My father had founded a small tech company with groundbreaking patents.

Gavin had worked there as a junior executive.

When my father died, Gavin convinced me to sell the patents to Apex Global — the failing company he later claimed to have built.

The truth was I had used my inheritance to buy Apex Global and save it.

Gavin had never built anything.

He had married the owner and pretended to be the king.

He had hidden my role from everyone, including me, for six years.

The past was not a love story.

It was a carefully constructed lie.

I had loved a man who had spent our entire marriage stealing my legacy and calling it his own.

I closed the files and looked out at the city lights.

The past was painful.

But it had left me the tools to make the future different.
