Chapter 10: The Move

The single-level unit passed inspection on a clear midweek morning. I signed the final papers with the attorney present and the bank’s transfer already cleared. The caregiver coordinated the practical sequence—packing the ground-floor essentials, arranging a medical-transport service for the day of the move, and scheduling the residual contents of the two-story house for appraisal and sale. I did not request help from Daniel. The neighbor who had once carried groceries up the steps offered to water the old garden until the listing went active; I accepted that and nothing further from the previous circle of emergency favors.
On moving day the wheelchair rolled through a doorway that required no calculation. The bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen existed on the same floor. The caregiver stayed the first full day to set routines, then shifted to the agreed daytime schedule. By evening the new place held the quiet of a decision completed rather than a crisis barely managed.
