Chapter 4: The Private Room

The private room was small, windowless, and deliberately quiet. The senior officer introduced herself as Ms. Rivera and placed both folders on the table between us. The manager remained standing until I was settled, then took the chair opposite.

“Mrs. Carter,” Ms. Rivera began, “your husband established this account sixteen years ago under a structure we rarely see outside of specific estate-planning directives. It is not a standard checking or savings product. It is a restricted emergency facility funded by a combination of marketable securities and cash reserves. The access protocol is intentionally narrow. Only the named survivor—you—may open it, and only upon presentation of the physical card and verification of identity.”

She opened the first folder and turned it so I could read the summary page.

The number at the bottom of the page did not look real.

I read it twice. Then a third time. The Social Security deposit that had governed every calculation since Arthur’s death sat beside it like a child’s allowance next to a ledger that belonged to a different life.
