Chapter 11: The Old House Closes

The two-story house sold within six weeks to a young family who did not need to ask whether the stairs were manageable. The proceeds, routed through the attorney, settled into the same structure Arthur had prepared. I kept a short list of items—his desk clock, a single box of photographs, the card itself in a new envelope—and released the rest without ceremony. Daniel was informed of the sale by a brief written notice from the attorney after the closing. He did not contest anything. There was nothing to contest. The property had always been in my name.
Melissa sent a text message two days later expressing that they were “relieved I had landed on my feet.” I did not reply. Relief offered after a closed door did not require acknowledgment.
