Chapter 6: First Consequences

By the end of the first week the criminal referral for aggravated assault had been formally accepted for review, and the civil preservation orders were in place across every account and property interest Daniel had tried to treat as shared.

He attempted one indirect approach through a mutual acquaintance. Marcus shut it down with a single letter referencing the protective order. Vivian remained silent in the channels that reached me. Silence was acceptable. Contact was not.

The hospital moved me to a step-down unit. The pain remained a constant companion, but the fog of the first nights had thinned enough for me to review the preliminary inventory of the packet with Marcus. Every recording, every altered page, every transaction log was accounted for. The instructions I had left for suspicious hospitalization had executed exactly as written.

I asked Marcus for one additional step: a formal accounting demand for every dollar moved under the false premise of the transfer documents, and a hold on any further dissipation. He filed it the same day.

That night I lay on my side, the only position the burns allowed, and considered the three years of careful performance—the lowered eyes, the accepted criticisms, the signed pages that were never the real ones. They had needed me broken and transferred. They had obtained the appearance of both.

They had never obtained the woman who knew how to build a case while living inside one.

The oil had been the last act they controlled.

Everything after it belonged to the record.

And the record, unlike dinner, would not be late.
