Chapter 10: Negotiations
The formal settlement discussions began in Rebecca’s conference room on a gray Thursday morning. Derek arrived with his attorney. Jessica did not attend. He looked thinner, less certain, the polished confidence he had worn in the coffee shop noticeably diminished.
Rebecca laid out our position without drama. The medical dating established conception prior to the vasectomy. The public accusations of infidelity, the abrupt abandonment, and the attempted coercive divorce agreement would all be relevant if the matter proceeded to litigation. We were prepared to negotiate reasonable child support, clear custody terms favoring primary residence with me, and a formal retraction of the adultery claims.
Derek’s attorney tried to frame the earlier accusations as “an understandable reaction under emotional distress.” Rebecca did not accept the framing. Emotional distress did not erase the two weeks I had spent as the neighborhood’s cautionary tale, nor did it erase the suitcase, the mother-in-law’s trash bags, or the steakhouse caption about removing a lie.

By the end of the meeting a temporary support arrangement was in place and a framework for final settlement had been outlined. Derek looked at me only once as he left. I met his eyes without flinching. There was nothing left to perform for him.
That afternoon I drove home with the windows down, the late autumn air cool against my face. For the first time since the morning of the two pink lines, the future felt like something I could plan rather than something I had to survive.
